Celebrating 20 years of savoring art and celebrating artists

Although gifted in a variety of media, Corea, ME (and Christiana, PA) artist Dan Miller (1928-) considers himself to be primarily a printmaker. Having spent the last 59 summers in a home he built on Crowley Island in the 60's, Dan is renowned for his Corea inspired works: seascapes, landscapes, birds, insects and animals that celebrate Maine and nature. He also creates detailed portraits of writers, philosophers, artists and musicians, focusing on people who have interesting faces with exceptional character.
Sometimes realistic, other times interpretive and even fanciful, his work is intricate, filled with texture, shape and personality. Using soft pine, Dan carves his blocks relying on a straight-edged razor blade for the detail work and incorporating the wood grain to create depth, movement and personality in his compositions. From his carved blocks, Dan creates prints using Japanese Mulberry paper and a wooden spoon. For years, after completing a print run, Dan used his carved blocks as firewood, but then came to see them as the original works of art they are. Dan has been a faculty member at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts since 1964, and is an exceptional teacher, an outstanding mentor and a true gentleman.
